She was inspired by Ovid's story of Iphis and Ianthe in his Metamorphoses which dealt with gender issues and dysphoria in 8 CE that continue to be valid today: Afraid of her husbands vow to kill her child if it was a girl, Iphis's mother decided to raise Iphis as a boy. When it came time to marry, her father, believing she was male, arranged a marriage to Ianthe. Iphis and Ianthe fell deeply in love but Iphis felt distraught haunted by thoughts of what would happen to either of them if her gender were discovered on the wedding night. Fearing for her daughter's life, Iphis's mother took her to the temple of Isis and prayed to the goddess for help. Known as the savour goddess and goddess of transformation, she granted their wish and changed Iphis into a man. They married and lived happily together. Singleton starts a painting by working abstractly, painting in colour and marks. She builds up layers and develops a setting and figures and finally a narrative. The amount of time taken to complete a piece varies considerably depending on the artwork. Singleton uses iridescent and florescent pigments that shimmer and glow differently with changing light. There is a nice texture to the physical pieces that is difficult to see photographed. This piece looks fantastic floated in 50cm x 40 cm frame.
