It is a self-portrait of the Milanese artist descending from a cadet branch of the noble Gonzaga Mantovani. Giovan Francesco took part still twenty in the Second World War with the Cavalry Savoy participating, with the "ghost" squadron to patrol actions in the Russian steppe. The months passed to very close contact with the horse during the war, lit him a real passion for horses, which became a privileged subject of numerous paintings, sculptures and poems. Self-taught artist, he declared 'my true teacher is nature', and to it faithful, after the horses, he devoted himself predominantly to the landscapes and death nature, always depicted "en plein air". Giovan Francesco participó aún veinte en la Segunda Guerra Mundial con la Caballería de Saboya participando, con el escuadrón "fantasma", en acciones de patrulla en la estepa rusa. Los meses transcurridos a un contacto muy estrecho con el caballo durante la guerra, le encendieron una verdadera pasión por los caballos, que se convirtió en un tema privilegiado de numerosas pinturas, esculturas y poemas. Sus obras figuran en varios museos, entre ellos el de la Caballería de Pinerolo, el histórico Museo de la Guardia di Finanza de Roma, el Museo de Tel Aviv, el Museo de Arte de Los Ángeles, en colecciones públicas y privadas de Italia, Francia, España, Luxemburgo, Indonesia, China, Japón, Singapur y América.
