HISTORY of This Artwork
Sometime in the 1960s, Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali, already considered one of the leading artists worldwide, discovered a special book published in Paris in 1565 by Richard Breton, as the 'last work' of the writer François Rabelais, and named it after his bestseller about the Giant Pantagruel. This book, "Les Songes Drôlatiques de Pantagruel", i.e. The Drolatic Dreams of Pantagruel (where 'Drolatic' means funny and amusing), consists of 120 woodcuts, each page showing a completely different figure: strange, hybrid creatures, combinations of man and animal, insect, plant and object, pot-bellied or hunchbacked, with special noses, snouts, trunks or beaks; each having a title in the end of the book.
Enraptured and inspired by the new discovery, he chose 25 images and devised variations on these then four-century-old prints. These images have been printed as original lithographs at Atelier Grapholith in Paris, and published by Carpentier in Geneve in 1973.
This very artwork is one meant to represent The Antiphysical Creature, i.e. an unnatural and monstrous being which challenges the laws of Physics and Nature.
This image is particularly interesting among the ones in the series because it resembles Dali's face, although the very image which inspired him predates his birth by centuries!

Cet affreux personnage, affublé du bonnet de la folie, paré d'un long scapulaire, tenant dans chaque bras un enfant emmailloté, et dont l'un est également coiffé du bonnet de la folie, et portant dans le plis de sa robe un tas de petits magots, ses enfants, aussi affreux qu'elle, est évidemment l'Antiphysie, du chap. XXXII, liv. IV. C'est d'eux que Rabelais dit dans ce chapitre: "Depuys elle (l'Antiphysie) engendra les matagots, cagots, papelards, etc.
This horrible character, wearing the cap of madness, adorned with a long scapular, holding in each arm a swaddled child, one of whom is also wearing the cap of madness, and carrying in the folds of his robe a pile of little magots, his children, as horrible as she, is obviously Antiphysia, from chap. HISTORIA de esta obra
En algún momento de la década de 1960, el artista surrealista español Salvador Dalí, considerado ya uno de los artistas más importantes del mundo, descubrió un libro especial publicado en París en 1565 por Richard Breton, como "última obra" del escritor François Rabelais, y le dio el nombre de su bestseller sobre el Gigante Pantagruel. Este libro, "Les Songes Drôlatiques de Pantagruel", es decir, Los Sueños Drólaticos de Pantagruel (donde "Drólatico" significa gracioso y divertido), consta de 120 xilografías, cada página mostrando una figura completamente diferente: extrañas criaturas híbridas, combinaciones de hombre y animal, insecto, planta y objeto, barrigones o jorobados, con narices especiales, hocicos, troncos o picos; cada uno con un título al final del libro.
Embelesado e inspirado por el nuevo descubrimiento, eligió 25 imágenes e ideó variaciones sobre estos grabados, que entonces tenían cuatro siglos de antigüedad. Estas imágenes fueron impresas como litografías originales en el Atelier Grapholith de París y publicadas por Carpentier en Ginebra en 1973.
Esta misma obra de arte es una de las que pretenden representar La criatura antifísica, es decir, un ser antinatural y monstruoso que desafía las leyes de la Física y la Naturaleza.
Esta imagen es especialmente interesante entre las de la serie porque se parece al rostro de Dalí, aunque la misma imagen que le inspiró es anterior a su nacimiento en siglos

Este horrible personaje, tocado con el gorro de la locura, adornado con un largo escapulario, sosteniendo en cada brazo a un niño en pañales, uno de los cuales lleva también el gorro de la locura, y portando en los pliegues de su túnica un montón de pequeños magots, sus hijos, tan horribles como ella, es evidentemente Antiphysia, del cap. XXXII, libro IV. XXXII, libro IV. Es de ellos que Rabelais dice en este capítulo: "Puesto que ella (Antiphysia) engendró a los matagots, cagots, papelards, etc.
