Schifano made his debut in the exhibition at ''Salita di Roma'', presented by Pierre Restany in 1960. It attracts many critics by creating monochrome paintings which give the idea of screen. He signed an exclusive contract with Ileana Sonnabend. In 1962, he made his first trip to the United States where he was attracted by artists like Franz Kline, he frequented Frank O'Hara, Jasper Johns, Rothko, Andy Warhol, Gregory Corso. He participated in the exhibition ''The New Realists'' at the Sidney Janis Gallery in New York. After two solo shows in Rome and Paris, he returned to the United States. In the elaboration of his artworks, the artist prefers to use colors of industrial production for their ability to preserve their brilliance.
