A super museum size Orientalist / Art Nouveau bronze sculpture by Emmanuel Villanis (1858-1914).
Emmanuel Villanis was born in Lille, and studied at the Accademia Albertina in Turin under Odoardo Tabacchi. Since 1885, Villanis moved to Paris and became one of the most admired sculptors towards the end of the 19th century. His female bronze busts and full body statues were exported all over the world from Paris, particularly to the United States.
Today he is recognised as one of the foremost sculptors of the Art Nouveau era and is his work is highly sought after by collectors.
Nonetheless, most of his works are busts, and their size vary from 20 to 50/60 cm at most.
This one is a monumental sculpture of a very recurrent biblical subject since Renaissance: the Jewish heroin Judith, represented holding the sword she used for beheading the evil general Holofernes, felt asleep after being seduced by her.
