About the Collection (L'Estampe Moderne)
L'Estampe Moderne appeared in 1897-1899 as a series of 24 monthly fascicles, each containing 4 original lithographs, printed by Parisian Imprimerie Champenois. Many accomplished European Art Nouveau painters contributed works to this publication, which contained only Original prints invented and produced especially for this collection. The publication was edited by Charles Masson and H. Piazza. Each issue came in a paper cover bearing an original lithograph by Alphonse Mucha.
Each lithograph was accompanied by a tissue containing the details (title of the artwork, name of the artist, etc.) and a short text by a well-known author who inspired the artist.

THE ARTIST
Émile Berchmans (1867–1947) was a pivotal Belgian painter and illustrator, fundamentally shaping the Art Nouveau movement in Liège. Alongside colleagues like Armand Rassenfosse, he revolutionized graphic arts, moving away from rigid academic styles toward fluid, organic forms. Berchmans is perhaps best known for his masterful posters, which often featured elegant, ethereal women and bold typography, earning him international acclaim during the "poster mania" of the 1890s. As a dedicated educator, he served as a professor and later the Director of the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Liège, influencing generations of Walloon artists.
His works are preserved in several prestigious institutions, particularly those focusing on the history of print and Belgian art: Musée des Beaux-Arts (BAL), Liège; Royal Library of Belgium (KBR), Brussels; Musée d'Orsay, Paris; The Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg

from the text on the tissue paper:
"E. Berchmans est un des artistes les mieux doués de la jeune école belge; il s'est plus particulièrement révélé jusqu'ici aux amateurs par ses affiches de symbolisme ingénieux et de coloration délicate. Dans Renouveau, où un satyre et une faunesse s'en vont enlacés à travers les futaies reverdies, on retrouve les qualités du dessinateur habile et du peintre épris de poésie."
English Translation:
E. Berchmans is one of the most gifted artists of the young Belgian school; until now, he has primarily made a name for himself among collectors through his posters of ingenious symbolism and delicate coloration. In Renouveau, where a satyr and a female faun wander enlaced through the greening forests, one finds once again the qualities of a skillfull draftsman and a painter enamoured with poetry.
