About the Collection (L'Estampe Moderne)
L'Estampe Moderne appeared in 1897-1899 as a series of 24 monthly fascicles, each containing 4 original lithographs, printed by Parisian Imprimerie Champenois. Many accomplished European Art Nouveau painters contributed works to this publication, which contained only Original prints invented and produced especially for this collection. The publication was edited by Charles Masson and H. Piazza. Each issue came in a paper cover bearing an original lithograph by Alphonse Mucha.
Each lithograph was accompanied by a tissue containing the details (title of the artwork, name of the artist, etc.) and a short text by a well-known author who inspired the artist.

THE ARTIST
Charles Lucien Léandre (1862–1934) was a celebrated French illustrator, caricaturist, and painter who perfectly captured the spirit of the Belle Époque. While he was a highly skilled academic painter, he gained immense fame for his work in satirical journals like Le Rire and L'Assiette au Beurre. His style is defined by a remarkable versatility: he could pivot from biting, exaggerated social caricatures to soft, ethereal lithographs of idealized women.
Léandre’s draftsmanship was characterized by a fluid, expressive line and a mastery of pastel and lithography. In his more serious work, he embraced a Symbolist and Art Nouveau aesthetic, often focusing on the grace and psychological depth of his subjects. Whether he was mocking the political elite with sharp wit or depicting a romantic, dreamlike scene, his work always maintained a sense of structural elegance and refined observation, making him one of the most beloved graphic artists of his era.

from the text on the tissue paper:
"Sous le ciel gris d'hiver, à travers la campagne ouatée de neige, les gens s'acheminent vers la petite église dont la cloche qui tinte rappelle aux fidèles la naissance du Sauveur. Et tous vont, jeunes et vieux, pauvres et riches, l'aïeule en deuil qui se souvient du passé, l'enfant qui rit à l'avenir, et ceux qui vivent dans le recueillement des monastères et ceux qui vont errant à travers les routes de la vie..."
English Translation:
Under the gray winter sky, across a countryside muffled in snow, people make their way toward the small church whose tolling bell reminds the faithful of the Savior's birth. And they all go—young and old, poor and rich—the mourning grandmother remembering the past, the child laughing at the future, those who live in the quiet contemplation of monasteries, and those who wander along the roads of life...
